I am thinking of buying .Mac in order to make my own website. Do people think this is a good or bad idea?

I am a performer who wants to make a website and I was thinking of buying .Mac to do this. The person at the Apple Store recommended it and it seems to make sense, but perhaps I am being bamboozled by a company employee. Thoughts?
