People who've seen Sherlock Holmes?

I just watched Sherlock Holmes (great movie by the way), and I was wondering if anyone new what the whole deal was in the opening scene in the crypts. Does anyone know what it is that Holmes breaks (it looks like a gl rod), and what it would've done if Watson had shot him. Thanks.
