Why do you suppose Roman emperor Julian the Apostate rejected his Christian upbringing for paganism?

He was raised as a Christian but upon becoming emperor, he favoured bringing Paganism (the mystery cult of Mithra) as the prime religion of the Roman empire. (He failed to do it) Why do you suppose he wanted this? What are the historical sources that explains this?
